Our hardworking Boca Bits Editor, Steve is 59 years old. He has been married for 35 years to Theresa (Terry). They have one son, Edward Costello, a police captain, and father of their granddaughter Katlynn.
Steve was born in Waterbury, Connecticut. While in his sophomore year at college and about to be drafted, he enlisted in the Army.
In Steve's own words: "When I came out of the Army, I worked with many different trucking companies, many of which are now gone, both long haul and local operations. I started with Roadway as a Rate Clerk, a part time job (4 hours guaranteed), and later did the same job with Consolidated Freightways and a small local carrier, all at the same time, jumping from one to the other each evening. After a while, I was known in the trucking community in the South West section of Connecticut, and went from Rate Clerk, to OS&D Clerk (Overages, Shortages and Damages), and finally to Loading Dock Supervisor.
When we moved to Florida, after the blizzard of 1978, I again worked for various trucking concerns, with jobs from Loading Dock Supervisor to Claims Manager, and many others in between, until I lost all feeling on my right side, for a period of nine weeks. After many tests and visits to doctors and hospitals, all that I was told was that it must be stress, as no one could find anything physically wrong, so I left the trucking industry.
After a six month period of inactivity, decided to apply for city, state, federal and school district jobs. I worked temporarily for the Health Education Department of the School Board of Broward County (SBBC), at which time I decided that SBBC is where I wanted to be. When the temporary job at Health Education ended, I started applying for any clerical job available with SBBC, and was hired by the Maintenance Department in 1988, and have been there ever since.
I enjoy working on computers and helping others work on computers, as well as playing golf, fishing, reading and doing a little writing. I guess you could say that I am active, though not very athletic. My son sometimes asks me if I want to go running with him, and I always tell him 'The last time I ran to the mailbox, they had to call the Paramedics.'
My wife and I met through a computer dating service, when they were just first available, as we both worked for trucking companies, her during the day, and me at night, with neither having much opportunity to be out in the regular dating community.
I became interested in computers back when I was working for a trucking company in 1973. The company I was working for was bought out by a larger company, which brought in computers. No one really wanted to know anything, and soon I was the 'go to guy' for the Northeast.
I love to fish, read, and spend time with my granddaughter. I follow NASCAR, and even attend a couple of races every year. To relax and unwind I enjoy sitting on my patio with a cigar, glass of scotch, and a good book. Five years from now, hopefully, I'll be retired and enjoying life.
My current computer equipment is an E-Machine desktop running XP, and a HP notebook, running Vista. I also have an old E-Machine laptop, on which I have been experimenting with various Linus distributions, none of which I have been able to get working so far.
I'd like to see more members become involved in all facets of the organization. There is need for people to come forward and backup all positions, to keep BRCS going and improving its value to all."
